What is Supervised mode on iPhone?
Supervised mode on iPhone means the organisation supervises the device: it receives company configuration, removal of management can be blocked, and a factory reset still returns it to the company if it remains in Apple Business. ABMDM sets this mode on every device in the system. Do not supervise a personal iPhone without written consent.

Supervised means the organisation supervises the device
Supervised mode is a state Apple puts on an iPhone or iPad when the device belongs to an organisation. A supervised device can take fuller company configuration than a phone that is only “user-enrolled” in a personal style.
On ABMDM features, enrolment states it clearly: Supervised mode on every device. The shop does not switch it on by hand on each phone if the device went through the Apple Business and ABMDM flow.
Supervised is not an app and does not show a “being watched” icon like unknown software. The user sees the organisation name at setup, and Device Management in Settings.
Which devices can become Supervised
Devices bought through the business channel, with the serial in Apple Business: at first power-on they receive configuration and become supervised under the default MDM server.
Retail-bought devices (a high-street shop, a ready stock unit): they do not enrol themselves. Reset them to the initial setup screen, add them with Apple Configurator on iPhone, assign ABMDM, then power on again. Detail is in Apple Configurator: add a retail iPhone.
An employee's personal phone: ABMDM does not yet have a link/QR flow (it is under “Coming soon”). Do not supervise a home phone without written consent.
| Where the device came from | How it becomes Supervised |
|---|---|
| Business-channel purchase | Assign the serial, power on, receive MDM |
| Retail / ready stock | Configurator on iPhone, then assign MDM |
| Employee's personal phone | Only with consent; ABMDM QR flow is not open yet |
What Supervised lets you configure
Only a supervised device can block removal of management, block erase, and block Apple Account changes under company configuration. ABMDM can also push Wi-Fi, VPN, certificates, a required passcode, hide or block apps, and block AirDrop, camera, screenshots and computer pairing — the same configuration groups as on the features page.
Locking an iPad to one app, arranging the home screen, and web filtering are still “Coming soon”. Do not promise a feature that is not live.
After a factory reset: if the device is still in Apple Business it returns to the system. That is anti-removal, not a “stuck fault”.

What the user sees on a supervised phone
At first setup the device may show the organisation name and that it is remotely managed. In Settings the user finds Device Management with the company name.
They cannot treat the phone as a personal device they will wipe and take home. That is expected on a company iPhone. It is not a licence for the shop to read messages.
Explain this when you hand the device over, in the house rules or in the handover record. Surprise at the first lock or the first reset is how complaints start.
What Supervised does not allow
It does not read messages, photos or passwords. It does not turn the shop into all-day staff surveillance.
Location is still sensitive data (Law 91/2025/QH15, Decree 356/2025/ND-CP): only in Lost Mode or when a contract is overdue, with a log.
Do not use Supervised to keep a customer's device after they have paid off. Remove management when you no longer have title.
Supervised on instalment and kiosk devices
Instalment phones stay company property until they are paid (Civil Code Article 453). Supervised mode, plus anti-removal, is how a reset does not drop the device out of the contract. After payoff, remove management so the next owner is not staring at a company setup screen.
A counter iPad that must stay on the sales app needs Supervised configuration. Single-app lock is still “Coming soon”; until then, use the live restrictions (hide or block apps, block erase) and do not claim a kiosk mode that is not shipping.
What the shop needs to do
Connect Apple Business to ABMDM. For new business-channel devices: set ABMDM as the default server. For retail devices: a Configurator process, with one person allowed to add devices.
Tell staff: a company phone is supervised, a reset does not take it out of the company, and the company cannot read messages. Put that in the rules or the handover record.
The trial is 14 days, up to five devices. Call 0913 081 986 (8am–9pm) when you add the first supervised device.

Frequently asked questions
How is Supervised different from MDM?
MDM is the management system. Supervised is a mode on the iPhone itself: the organisation supervises the device, so it can take fuller company configuration. ABMDM sets Supervised mode on every device in the system.
Can a retail-bought phone become Supervised?
Yes, after you add it with Apple Configurator on iPhone into Apple Business and assign MDM. Business-channel devices become supervised at first power-on.
Can staff turn Supervised mode off on the phone?
If the device is still in Apple Business and anti-removal is configured, a factory reset does not take it out of the organisation. That is the point of Supervised mode on a company phone.
Should we supervise an employee's personal iPhone?
Only with written consent. A personal phone does not become a company phone by itself. Enrolment by link or QR for personal devices on ABMDM is still under “Coming soon”.
Does Supervised let the company read messages?
No. Supervised mode does not open messages, photos or passwords. Apple's protocol still blocks reading personal content.
