Apple Configurator: add a retail iPhone

Apple Configurator on iPhone adds a retail-bought device — one that did not come through a business reseller — into Apple Business. Reset the device to the initial setup screen, scan it with an iPhone signed into the company account, then assign it to ABMDM. Business-channel devices skip this step: they enrol at first power-on.

Retail devices are not business-channel devices

A phone bought through a business reseller has its serial in Apple Business and picks up MDM at power-on. A retail device is one taken from a high-street counter, ready stock, or a transfer from another shop — the serial is not yet in your organisation.

You do not cable every unit in the warehouse if the devices came through the right channel. Use Apple Configurator only when the serial is not on the portal. Background: What is Apple Business?.

ABMDM states on features: add devices bought elsewhere with Apple Configurator on iPhone.

Do not scan before you have Apple Business. You need an approved organisation account, ABMDM connected as the management server, then you add retail serials. Registering the portal is a separate article; this one is only for devices that are not yet on the portal.

Prepare before you scan

One iPhone with Apple Configurator installed, signed in with the company's Apple Business account — not a salesperson's personal Apple Account.

The device you add must belong to the business (bought to issue to staff, to sell on instalments, or to lease). Do not add a customer's phone “to hold it”, and do not add a device with no paperwork.

Put the device on the initial setup screen. If it still has data: back up the company part you need, then erase/reset. Do not describe how to bypass someone else's Activation Lock; a phone that asks for a previous Apple Account password cannot be added until that account holder removes the lock.

One person adds devices. Many people scanning at random makes it easy to assign the wrong organisation.

Steps to add a device

Follow Add devices bought elsewhere:

  1. Install Apple Configurator on iPhone and sign in with the Apple Business account.
  2. Reset the device you want to add to the initial setup screen.
  3. Scan the pattern on that device with the iPhone running Configurator.
  4. Assign the device to ABMDM in Apple Business, then power it on so it receives configuration.

After step 4, check the console: the serial is there, management status is on, send a test lock then unlock. If the device is missing, the default server was not assigned, or the phone was not powered on again.

Why this flow is on iPhone

ABMDM's documented path is Apple Configurator on iPhone, not a Mac on every counter. A shop can add retail serials with one supervised iPhone signed into Apple Business.

This article does not cover using Configurator to take over a phone that still belongs to another person. If setup asks for someone else's Apple Account, stop.

After the device is in the system

A retail device, once added, is Supervised the same way as a business-channel device. Anti-removal, remote lock and device financing apply like any other unit. See What is Supervised mode on iPhone?.

Record the serial, the date added, and who added it. In a multi-branch shop, attach the device to the right branch in ABMDM.

Instalment devices: add them to the system before you hand them over. Do not give out a clean phone and remember to scan later.

Common mistakes

Scanning while the phone still opens to the home screen: return it to initial setup, then scan again.

Signing into Configurator with a personal account: sign out, sign in with Apple Business.

Scanning but never assigning ABMDM: the serial sits on Apple's portal and the ABMDM console stays empty.

The device asks for someone else's Activation Lock: stop. Do not pay to strip it. Return or exchange it with the seller.

The trial is 14 days. Call 0913 081 986 (8am–9pm) when you add the first batch of retail devices.

Frequently asked questions

Do phones bought at an official Apple shop need Configurator?

Not if a reseller already assigned the serial to your Apple Business. Retail phones that did not go through the business channel need Apple Configurator on iPhone.

Do we have to use a Mac?

The ABMDM flow uses Apple Configurator on iPhone: sign in with the Apple Business account and scan a device that is on the setup screen. This article does not describe how to bypass someone else's device.

What if we forget to reset the phone before scanning?

The device must be on the initial setup screen. If it is in use and still has a personal account, back up any company data you need to keep, then reset it before adding it to the organisation.

Does it join ABMDM by itself after the scan?

You still assign the device to the ABMDM server in Apple Business, then power it on so it receives configuration. A scan without assignment leaves it off the ABMDM console.

Is there a step-by-step guide on the site?

Yes, the guide “Add a retail iPhone with Configurator”. If you need to do it now, call 0913 081 986.
