Devices added with Apple Configurator: the first 30 days

Apple Business documentation describes a 30-day provisional period for devices added with Apple Configurator: the person who receives the device can release it from the organisation, remove supervision and leave the device management service. The period starts once the device is successfully assigned and enrolled. This article separates what Apple says, what it does not say, and what a shop should do.

What is the "30 days" for devices added with Apple Configurator?

According to Apple's guide, a device added with Apple Configurator has a "30-day provisional period". Once the device is given to a user, that person has 30 days to release it from Apple Business, remove supervision and leave the device management service (MDM). Source: Apple Business User Guide.

In other words, per Apple, the first 30 days are a window in which the person who receives the device can release it from the organisation themselves. This article only states what Apple writes and what a shop should do in that window; it does not explain how to remove or bypass management.

The step-by-step for adding a device is a separate article: Apple Configurator: add a retail iPhone.

When does the 30-day clock start?

Per Apple, the period begins after the device is successfully assigned and enrolled in a device management service: an external service linked to Apple Business, or the built-in service in Apple Business. Apple does not say it counts from the scan. Source: Apple Platform Deployment.

How to assign when adding a device, and where an unassigned device sits in Apple Business, is covered in Apple Configurator: add a retail iPhone and not repeated here.

Apple Configurator on iPhone needs an iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 16 or later.

Some third-party pages say that after 30 days the device can no longer be released. That is not a sentence in the Apple pages above, so this article does not rely on it.

What to do in the first 30 days

This part is ABMDM's recommendation to shops, not an Apple term.

  1. Record the date the device was assigned and received configuration, with the serial and who added it. Apple counts from successful assignment and enrolment, so this is the date you count from.
  2. Hand over a device only after the ABMDM console shows its serial and management status. If you cannot see it, do not hand it over.
  3. Add only devices the business owns. Apple notes that manually added devices are subject to the Authorized Devices terms of use.
  4. For a device already in use, Apple asks you to sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My before erasing. If it still asks for a previous person's account, stop; do not ask anyone to bypass it.
  5. Watch the log of times the device lost management and the abnormal-event alerts during the first 30 days. Both are listed on the features page.
  6. For instalment devices, consider seeking legal advice when drafting the contract. The legal side is in iPhone instalments with MDM.

When a device leaves the organisation

The console reports lost management: contact whoever holds the device and check whether the serial is still in Apple Business (Devices > Inventory). If it is not, do not guess; call 0913 081 986 (8am–9pm) and we will look at the case.

The features page lists blocking removal of management, returning a restored device to the system, and a log of lost management. The Apple documentation above does not say how these interact with the 30-day period, so ABMDM does not promise you will keep the device during that window.

Is a device bought through the proper channel different?

The Apple pages above describe the 30 days in the section on adding devices with Apple Configurator. They do not say whether it also applies to devices a reseller assigned in advance. To be sure for a given batch, ask the reseller and re-read Apple's Apple Configurator page.
