Handing over an instalment phone in 5 minutes: the process

An instalment hand-over stays short at the counter when the preparation is done beforehand: connecting Apple Business, setting the three lock tiers, the reminder and VietQR happen once. Each device then needs only a check in the system, a contract link, a rule, a test lock and unlock, and the hand-over. The article has a checklist that separates these two groups of work.

Can you hand over an instalment phone in 5 minutes?

You can arrange the counter step to be short, if the preparation is already done. "5 minutes" here is a target frame for designing your process. It is an estimate, not a commitment from ABMDM. Real time depends on how many devices, the network at the counter and who does the work; this article gives no duration for any single step.

What matters is splitting the work in two: things you do once for the whole shop, and things you repeat for every device. Below is a short checklist for both.

Checklist: once, and per device

Do once, before the first device

Each item has its own guide; this article only puts them in order:

  • Connect Apple Business to ABMDM: connect Apple Business.
  • Set the days for the three lock tiers and write the reminder with the shop phone number: set up lock tiers.
  • If you want devices to unlock when the customer transfers money, connect VietQR: connect VietQR. Until it is connected, an authorised person unlocks by hand and the log records it.
  • Test lock then unlock on a spare device before you apply it to a real contract.

Do for each device, at the counter

This is an order of tasks, not a timetable:

  1. Check the serial appears on the ABMDM console and the device is supervised. This comes before every other step.
  2. Link the device to the customer's contract.
  3. Assign the tier rule and reminder you set earlier to that contract.
  4. Send a test lock then unlock on the new device before it leaves the counter.
  5. Hand it over together with the contract that records the device management, and say clearly that the device still belongs to the shop until the customer has paid in full. The legal detail is in instalment iPhone with MDM.

What about a phone bought elsewhere?

A device from the business channel has its serial in Apple Business, so it connects to the management service when powered on; Apple calls this Automated Device Enrollment (Apple documentation). A retail purchase, or a phone moved from elsewhere, has no serial in your organisation yet: follow the guide to adding devices bought elsewhere before the hand-over day, not with the customer standing at the counter.

If the device still asks for a previous owner's Apple account, stop and do not hand it over.

What is not there at hand-over

A page where customers look up their own contract and pay is still marked "Coming soon" on the features page, so do not promise it to customers or build it into your process. Once VietQR is connected, the customer sees the amount due and a VietQR code on the lock screen when the device is restricted; that belongs to the later stage, not to the hand-over itself.

After hand-over

Reminders, tiered locks and payoff are covered on the device financing page and in the guide to setting up lock tiers.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 minutes a commitment from ABMDM?

No. Five minutes is a target frame for planning the hand-over, an estimate. Real time depends on how many devices, the network at the counter and who does the work.

What should be done before hand-over day?

Connect Apple Business, set the days for the three lock tiers, write the reminder with the shop phone number, connect VietQR if you want devices to unlock themselves, and test lock then unlock on a spare device.

Can a retail-bought phone follow this process?

Yes, but add it to the system with Apple Configurator on an iPhone and assign it to ABMDM before hand-over, not while the customer waits.

Can customers look up their contract and pay on a page of their own yet?

Not yet. That item is Coming soon and is not part of the service.

Are reminders sent after 9pm?

No. Reminders and overdue locks run only from 7am to 9pm, and only to the person named on the contract.
